Fingal Head area profile

Fingal Head and the small off-shore Island (Cook Island) were first sighted by James Cook on 16 May 1770. Affectionately referred to as just “Fingal”, it is located on the Far North Coast of New South Wales in the Tweed Shire, about 5 km south of the New South Wales and Queensland border, and south of the Gold Coast.

The headland was formed when the lava flows from the ancient Tweed Volcano rapidly cooled in the ocean currents. This unique rock formation sits just below Fingal Lighthouse on the headland. Walking tracks around the headland south to Dreamtime Beach or north along Leticia Spit are a real attraction for locals and visitors alike. Fingal, is an anglers’ paradise, offering both river and surf fishing, along with boat ramps right in the middle of the community for quick launches. Surfers frequent the area, taking advantage of both its many beach breaks, as well as the often amazing right handers of the Causeway.

Given its location, Fingal maintains it’s quiet and somewhat secret position, where most south bound traffic travels along the southbound freeway directly to the more populated Kingscliff, Salt and Casuarina communities.

Just to the south you find the quaint but fast developing town of Kingscliff. Tourists will know Kingscliff for its old worldly beach town charm, with a bustling beachfront precinct offering numerous cafes, pubs, SLSC and retailers. Kingscliff also offers a strong commercial presence in the area, including solicitors, architects, library, banks, ambulance/emergency services, medical centres and TAFE.

For the outdoor and active types, check out the scuba trips to Cook Island, whale-watching tours, deep sea fishing charters and learn to surf schools. The annual Greenback Fishing competition is well known and attended. A visit to the Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah is high on our list, if not for the love of art, certainly for the views from its cafe!

With access to Byron Bay only about 30-40 minutes south, the buzzing town offers a great destination for day trips, with its plethora of watering holes and eateries. The nearby hinterland area including Mt Warning is approximately 30 minutes west with its famous climb. Some other great daytrips include a drive to Harvest Cafe in Newrybar, a visit to the FARM in Byron Bay or a drive to some of the amazing waterfalls along our coastal hinterland.

Some of our favourites eateries include…..

Cudgen Headland Surf Club

Sheoak Shack – great coffee, food and live music

Tweed River Seafood – great fish and chips to take away and enjoy on the bank of the river

Cubby Bakehouse - coffee on the Tweed River

Choux Box Café – Kingscliff breakfast hotspot

Taverna - Greek in Kingscliff

Spice Den – Casuarina Beach

Osteria – a favourite Casuarina Beach hub for locals and visitors alike

Paper Daisy Restaurant located in the Halcyon House (Cabarita Beach)

Fins Restaurant (Salt Village) - fine dining

Right behind Kingscliff is the small farming village of CUDGEN. TIP: make sure you make your way to the newly opened Red Earth Brewery. Also make sure you visit Farm & Co - organic fruit and veggies and a new coffee shop.
