The land was originally owned by the Cammeraygal people, whose numbers and social structures were devastated in the decades following colonisation. In 1821, a 524-acre (2.12km2) land grant was made to Edward Wollstonecraft. The property was used to receive timber and agricultural produce from Coolangatta, with a private cottage built and named Crow’s Nest House, due to its ‘elevated and commanding position’. The original gates of the property still stand on the Pacific Highway, now an entrance to the North Sydney Demonstration School. From the late 1800’s to 1904, the property was gradually subdivided, with considerable land given to the government for construction of the Milsons Pont to Hornsby railway, completed in 1893.

Crows Nest is located just 6 kilometres North of the City, with the CBD easily accessible via the Bradfield Highway. State transit buses such as theM20 depart regularly from the area to the City. St Leonards Station operates on the North Shore and Northern Line of Sydney’s CityRail and is only seven stations or 20 minutes from Central. A prominent taxi rank is located next to the Burlington Street Roundabout. Crows Nest is also in close vicinity to Royal North Shore Hospital.
