Around the area

The land was originally owned by the Cammeraygal people, whose numbers and social structures were devastated in the decades following colonisation. In 1821, a 524-acre (2.12km2) land grant was made to Edward Wollstonecraft. The property was used to receive timber and agricultural produce from Coolangatta, with a private cottage built and named Crow’s Nest House, due to its ‘elevated and commanding position’. The original gates of the property still stand on the Pacific Highway, now an entrance to the North Sydney Demonstration School. From the late 1800’s to 1904, the property was gradually subdivided, with considerable land given to the government for construction of the Milsons Pont to Hornsby railway, completed in 1893.

Distance to CBD and Transport

Crows Nest is located just 6 kilometres North of the City, with the CBD easily accessible via the Bradfield Highway. State transit buses such as theM20 depart regularly from the area to the City. St Leonards Station operates on the North Shore and Northern Line of Sydney’s CityRail and is only seven stations or 20 minutes from Central. A prominent taxi rank is located next to the Burlington Street Roundabout. Crows Nest is also in close vicinity to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Schools and Education

The surrounding suburbs of Mosman, North Sydney and Lane Cove offer a variety of fine public and private schools. Private schools include St Ignatius College and the Shore School for boys, while Loreto Kirribilli, Wenona and Queenwood provide private education for girls. Redlands offers a private co-educational option. Public schools include North Sydney Boys and Girls, North Sydney Demonstration School, Cammeray Primary, and Lane Cove Public. The Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE (Crows Nest College) is also situated on West Street.

Sports, Fitness and Recreation

Crows Nest and its surrounding suburbs provide a variety of recreational options including basketball at the Roof Top Basketball Centre, rugby at St Leonards Park, rock climbing at Climb Fit, 9 holes at Cammeray Golf Club, sailing at RSYS Kirribilli, laps at North Sydney Olympic Pool and netball and swimming at Willoughby Leisure Centre.

Known for its large variety of cafes and restaurants, Willoughby Road and Pacific Highway are home to the majority of dining options in Crows Nest. Indian, Nepalese, Yum Cha, Italian, Modern Australian, French and Japanese are just some of the many cuisines available. Japanese are just some of the many cuisines available.
