Description

There’s nothing quite like the elegance of a well-maintained period home. From the traditional charm of the front picket fence, and the appeal of the wraparound verandah wreathed in vines, to the soaring grandeur of the 10ft ceilings and the vintage aesthetic of the decorative cornices and ceilings, the elements work seamlessly together to add character to this timeless masterpiece.

Located in one of the loveliest tree-lined streets in Lorn, within walking distance of the banks of the Hunter River and the revitalised CBD of Maitland, the property offers a tranquil suburban escape close to the city.

Its timeless allure begins from the street, with a heritage-coloured picket fence giving way to flourishing formal garden beds, a neatly manicured patch of lawn and a traditional weatherboard exterior with a Colorbond roof.

An ornamental screen door and delicate stained glass windows add to the authenticity of the traditional façade, while a wraparound verandah wreathed in fragrant vines, which runs across the front and down one side before returning along the back of the house, provide endless shady spots to sit and enjoy the tranquility of the location.

A heritage paint scheme of soft green and deep stone colours gives the exterior of the property a soft, homely appearance, with vivid white used for the timber window frames for contrast.

White has also been used effectively inside the home to create a fresh, crisp look, picking out the detail on the panelled ceiling, hallway fretwork, decorative cornices and tall skirting boards to accentuate the period style.

A variety of soft, neutral colours have been used for the walls throughout, with the white picture rails and the remaining wall surfaces above it also painted white to lighten and brighten the space.

The home has three oversized bedrooms, with the front two both featuring large built-in wardrobes complete with shelving, hanging space and drawers.

A timber box window with stunning stained-glass windows and a charming built-in window seat with storage give the master bedroom a sense of romance, complemented by the original polished timber floorboards that run throughout the entire home.

All three bedrooms have beautiful decorative ceilings and vintage pendant lights, while the original coal-burning fireplace with its decorative tiled hearth and timber mantelpiece adds to the charm of the third bedroom.

The home has a variety of living spaces to cater for large families or owners who enjoy entertaining, including a formal lounge room with stylish double French doors that open out to the side verandah.

The kitchen features both contemporary and vintage elements that work together to create a space that is warm and welcoming, including heritage-style panelled cabinetry in a crisp white finish and a granite-look laminate benchtop, which wrap around the edges of the kitchen. A stunning island bench with 20mm white stone benchtop sits in the middle of the space for added storage and preparation areas.

The kitchen and adjoining open plan dining room flow seamlessly into an expansive lounge room at the rear, creating a lovely spacious zone where families or friends can gather together.

The huge second living area stretches across the rear of the house, with a bank of large glass sliding doors running the full width of the room flooding it with natural light. Framing the flourishing cottage gardens at the rear to create a picturesque outlook, the doors can also be opened wide to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience that extends the living space onto the rear covered verandah.

Large enough to accommodate an outdoor dining table and lounge setting, the verandah provides the perfect space to sit and enjoy the lush green outlook. An abundance of shrubs, flowering plants and towering trees create a tapestry of colour all year round, while also adding to the peaceful privacy of the space.

The property is perfectly positioned within walking distance of the local primary school and sporting facilities, as well as cafes, boutiques and neighbourhood shops.

Across the other side of the Hunter River via the Belmore Bridge sits the revitalised Levee precinct in Maitland’s city centre, which is a thriving hub of restaurants, cafes, boutiques and businesses, while the suburb’s proximity to the New England Highway provides connectivity to key regional attractions.

Around Lorn

Located across the Hunter River from Maitland via the Belmore Bridge is the traditional garden suburb of Lorn.

European settlement of the area began in 1823 when Thomas McDougall received a land grant of 360 hectares on the banks of the Hunter River.

Planning to create a traditional garden suburb was well underway by 1911 and since then Lorn has gracefully evolved while retaining its character and authenticity to become one of the dress circle locations in the Maitland local government area.

Renowned for its wide tree-lined streetscapes and Federation and Californian bungalow period properties, Lorn is a sought-after area ideally located within walking distance of the Maitland city centre.

A central shopping village composed of boutique shops and cafes is a central meeting place for residents, while a short stroll over the Belmore Bridge brings you to the redeveloped ‘Levee’ shopping mall, home to a growing range of retail outlets, cafes and restaurants, as well as an interesting calendar of annual events such as the Aroma Festival.

With a collection of well-maintained parks and playgrounds scattered throughout the suburb, Lorn provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation with the kids, while the Lorn Park cricket oval, Lorn Park Bowling, Sports and Recreation Club and Marcellin Park rugby union grounds ensure a strong sporting community.

A new proposal for the Lorn riverbank has recently been released for community feedback. The masterplan shows areas of paved plazas, new picnic facilities, adventure play areas, steps down to the water and terraced lawns, which are designed to make the most of the scenic riverside location.

While much of Lorn’s appeal rests with its scenic streetscapes and quiet character, its central location adds to its popularity, situated two minutes from Maitland and 10 minutes from the various retail and commercial precincts of East Maitland including the thriving major shopping destination of the Stockland Green Hills Shopping Centre.

Chris Henry

Managing Director / Licensee

Thanks to his background in construction and development, Chris has a level of practical experience and intuition that’s rare to find in a real estate agent. After joining the River team over a decade ago, Chris worked alongside the Founder, his mother Joan Latter, before taking the reins in 2017. Now, he not only provides guidance and direction to the team, he’s also River’s lead sales agent – with one of the strongest track records in the entire Hunter region.

While Chris loves the challenge of matching buyers to their perfect homes, he also thrives on the many challenges that come with leading a team. In his eyes, culture is everything, and he’s worked hard to make River a place where everyone’s unique personalities and skills are not only welcomed, but celebrated. And with grand plans for River’s future, there’s certainly never a dull moment in his average day.

Tom Cohen

Property Sales Associate - Team Henry

After (quite literally) carving out a successful career in mining, Tom was ready for a new challenge. A hard worker with an eternally positive outlook, Tom was drawn to the possibilities of the Real Estate game – and after completing his certificate of registration, he found himself a home at River, joining our Property Management team in late 2018.

Having since moved into sales as part of Chris Henry’s team, there’s never a dull moment for Tom. He’s in charge of handling everything from client communications to open inspections – but in spite of his busy schedule, Tom always finds time to lend a hand to his fellow team members and make us smile. We have no doubt that, with his determination and drive, Tom will go far!
